| Rate Increase FAQ’s |
1. How much will the permit increase be?
The majority of 2009-2010 permit prices will increase approximately 20 cents per day or $4.17 per month or $50 per year. The rate increase in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 will be 47 cents per day or $9.67 per month or $116 per year.
2. Why such a large increase over three years?
The increase in revenue will provide the needed funds to focus on Alternative Transportation programs and new garage construction. New programs will be added on campus such as the enhanced Sun Tran Bus Pass Subsidy Program, Car Sharing, Bike Sharing Program, new buses to support Streetcar Routes, new Park & Ride lots, automated pay stations for our garages, Emergency Ride Home Program, Carpool Program for 2 passengers and a Student Payment plan.
3. How do the UA rates compare to our peer institutions and local lots and garages?
Currently the UA parking rates are the third lowest in the country among our peer institutions. An increase keeps us below the average parking rate for our Peer Universities. Our prices are 50% lower than what state employees have to pay downtown and ASU's rates are already as high as $780 per year. We do not get any state funding and must generate revenue to support all our parking and alternative transportation programs.
4. What process did PTS go through to raise permit prices?
PTS with the help of campus feedback, input from the Parking & Transportation Committee, the Transportation Needs Assessment Study, and the President have reviewed and evaluated the parking programs and price structure on the UA campus. In keeping with the “sustainability” committment developed by President Shelton, PTS must also increase its Sustainable Transportation Choices practices in order to keep pace with the campus, meet the needs of our customers, and reduce emissions and traffic congestion. Reducing emissions, campus traffic congestion, and our carbon footprint can only be accomplished through increased transportation choices and a reduction in the drive alone rate.
