I-10 Expansion.
Interstate 10 through Tucson is now open fully - with four lanes each direction and all on- and off ramps - eight months ahead of the original schedule for the five-mile widening project.
The widening extends from Prince Road on the north end to 29th Street on the south end. Work started in January 2007 and was expected to take just over three years.
During construction, on- and off ramps have been closed and traffic has been restricted to two lanes each direction, with local traffic relegated to the frontage road.
The state has gradually opened two on ramps and one off ramp over the past few months, andhas continued opening them where possible over thepast month, leading up to the reopening of all the travel lanes bythe end ofAugust.
The state had already moved the reopening forward once, from April 2010 to December 2009. State officials will meet their personal goal now and have opened as many ramps as possible for the influx of traffic for the return of University of Arizona students in mid-August.
When the freeway reopens the speed limit will be bumped up to 65 miles per hour through Tucson, since speed studies showed that's what drivers were doing anyway, even though the highway was posted at 55.
City streets crossing under I-10 will be restriped with bike lanes. Some smaller-scale work will continue through November, including the final striping on the frontage roads and interstate.
